Conflict of Interest Policy
Jurnal Hukum Islam (JHI) is committed to ensuring transparency, impartiality, and integrity throughout the scholarly publishing process. All authors, reviewers, and editors are required to disclose any actual, potential, or perceived conflicts of interest that could improperly influence the research, peer-review process, editorial decisions, or publication of a manuscript.
1. Definition of Conflict of Interest
A conflict of interest arises when personal, financial, professional, institutional, or other relationships may influence, or reasonably be perceived to influence, an individual's objectivity, judgment, or responsibilities in the publication process.
Conflicts of interest may include, but are not limited to:
-
Financial interests: Employment, consultancy, honoraria, grants, funding, investments, or other financial relationships relevant to the research.
-
Professional and institutional relationships: Employment, collaboration, supervision, institutional affiliation, or other professional relationships that may affect impartiality.
-
Personal relationships: Family, friendship, personal disputes, or other close relationships that may influence professional judgment.
-
Academic and intellectual interests: Strong academic commitments, competing research interests, or other circumstances that may affect an individual's impartiality.
-
Legal or organizational interests: Involvement in legal proceedings, policy advocacy, organizational activities, or institutional interests directly related to the subject of the manuscript.
The existence of a conflict of interest does not necessarily indicate misconduct. However, failure to disclose a relevant conflict may compromise the transparency and credibility of the publication process.
2. Responsibilities of Authors
Authors must disclose all actual, potential, or perceived conflicts of interest when submitting a manuscript to Jurnal Hukum Islam.
Authors must also disclose relevant funding sources, financial support, institutional affiliations, and other relationships that could reasonably be considered relevant to the research.
If no conflicts of interest exist, authors should include the following statement in their manuscript:
“The authors declare that they have no conflict of interest.”
Where a conflict exists, authors must provide a clear and accurate explanation of its nature. The editorial team will assess the disclosure and determine whether additional information or measures are necessary.
3. Responsibilities of Reviewers
Reviewers must disclose any circumstances that could affect their ability to evaluate a manuscript impartially. These may include recent collaboration with the authors, competitive academic relationships, personal disputes, institutional connections, or relevant financial interests.
Reviewers who have a significant conflict of interest must decline the review assignment or inform the editorial office so that an appropriate decision can be made.
Reviewers must not use unpublished information obtained through peer review for personal, professional, or competitive advantage.
4. Responsibilities of Editors
Editors must disclose and appropriately manage conflicts of interest that could influence editorial decisions.
An editor who has a relevant conflict of interest concerning a manuscript must not participate in its editorial assessment or decision-making. The manuscript should instead be assigned to an independent editor who can manage the review process impartially.
Editorial decisions must be based on scholarly merit, originality, methodological rigor, relevance to the journal's scope, and the results of peer review, rather than personal, financial, institutional, or political considerations.
5. Disclosure and Management Procedures
Conflict-of-interest disclosures must be provided at the time of manuscript submission or as soon as a relevant conflict becomes apparent.
The editorial office may request additional information when necessary to evaluate a disclosed conflict. Depending on the circumstances, appropriate measures may include reassignment of reviewers or editors, additional independent review, disclosure in the published article, or other safeguards to protect the integrity of the editorial process.
Authors, reviewers, and editors are expected to update their disclosures if relevant circumstances change during the publication process.
6. Publication and Transparency
Relevant conflicts of interest and funding information will be disclosed in the published article where appropriate. The journal will seek to ensure that disclosures are accurate, sufficiently clear, and consistent with applicable publication ethics standards.
All disclosures will be handled fairly and confidentially, subject to the need for transparent reporting and the protection of the integrity of the scholarly record.
7. Policy Compliance
Jurnal Hukum Islam follows recognized scholarly publication ethics principles, including relevant guidance from the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
Failure to disclose a material conflict of interest may result in further editorial assessment and appropriate action under the journal's publication ethics policies.
By submitting a manuscript, authors confirm that they have disclosed all relevant conflicts of interest and that all co-authors have been informed of the disclosure.
