1. Purpose

The editorial board of JIEF Journal of Islamic Economics and Finance (JIEF) recognizes that plagiarism is not acceptable and therefore establishes the following policy, stating specific actions (penalties) upon identification of plagiarism or text similarity in articles submitted for publication in JIEF.

2. Screening Tool and Similarity Threshold

JIEF uses Turnitin originality checking software to detect text similarity in submitted manuscripts and in the final version of articles ready for publication. A maximum similarity index of 25% is allowed for submitted papers. If the similarity index exceeds 25%, the article will be returned to the author for correction and re-submission.

3. Definition

Plagiarism involves the "use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work." This includes the unattributed reuse of text, data, tables, figures, equations, research models, or ideas, as well as self-plagiarism (reusing one's own previously published work without disclosure and citation).

4. Policy

Papers must be original, unpublished, and not under consideration for publication elsewhere. Any material taken verbatim from another source must be clearly identified as different from the author's original text by (1) indentation or block formatting, (2) use of quotation marks, and (3) identification of the source.

Any text exceeding fair use standards (defined here as more than two or three sentences or the equivalent), and any graphic material reproduced from another source, requires permission from the copyright holder and, where feasible, the original author(s), and also requires identification of the source, for example the previous publication.

When plagiarism is identified, the Editor-in-Chief responsible for the review of the paper will decide on measures according to the extent of plagiarism detected, in line with the guidelines below.

5. Levels of Plagiarism and Sanctions

Minor Plagiarism

A short sentence or short paragraph of another manuscript is plagiarized, without any significant data or ideas taken from other papers or publications.

Sanction: A warning is given to the authors, with a request to revise the manuscript and properly cite the original sources.

Intermediate Plagiarism

Significant data, paragraphs, or sentences of an article are plagiarized without proper citation of the original source.

Sanction: The submitted article is automatically rejected.

Severe Plagiarism

A large portion of an article is plagiarized, involving many aspects such as reproducing original results (data, formulations, equations, laws, statements, etc.), ideas, and methods presented in other publications.

Sanction: The paper is automatically rejected and the authors are barred from submitting further articles to JIEF.
