Correction and Retraction Policy
Journal of Islamic Economics and Finance (JIEF)
1. Purpose
The Journal of Islamic Economics and Finance (JIEF) is dedicated to upholding the accuracy, transparency, and integrity of the scholarly record. This policy establishes the procedures for addressing post-publication issues, including corrections, addenda, expressions of concern, retractions, and article removal when errors or ethical violations are identified after publication.
JIEF does not permit undisclosed alterations to the published scholarly record. Any post-publication change that may affect the interpretation, reliability, authorship, ethical standing, or publication status of an article must be handled transparently to ensure that readers are adequately informed.
2. Reporting Post-Publication Concerns
Authors, readers, reviewers, editors, research institutions, and other interested parties may report suspected errors or ethical concerns regarding articles published in JIEF to the editorial office. Reports should provide a clear description of the issue and, where available, relevant supporting evidence or documentation.
The editorial team will evaluate each concern based on its nature, seriousness, evidential support, and potential implications for the accuracy and reliability of the publication. When necessary, the Editors may seek clarification from the authors, reviewers, editorial board members, publisher, relevant institutions, or other parties involved before determining the appropriate course of action.
3. Minor Updates and Formal Corrections
Minor amendments may be made when identified issues do not materially affect the scholarly content, interpretation, or reliability of the published article. Examples include typographical mistakes, formatting inconsistencies, broken hyperlinks, metadata inaccuracies, and technical display problems. A separate correction notice may not be necessary for purely technical changes that do not affect the scholarly record.
A formal correction notice may be issued when an error requires an official amendment but does not invalidate the principal arguments or findings of the article. Such errors may concern author details, funding disclosures, acknowledgements, data presentation, references, citations, translation, transliteration, tables, figures, source descriptions, or explanations of research methods.
The correction notice will identify the affected article, describe the error, and specify the amendments made. Wherever technically feasible, the notice will be directly linked to the original publication to maintain transparency and facilitate access to the corrected information.
4. Addenda and Expressions of Concern
An addendum may be published when supplementary information is required to clarify or complete an existing article without fundamentally altering its principal arguments or conclusions. Such information may include additional source details, manuscript identifiers, data availability statements, ethical clarifications, or relevant methodological explanations.
An Expression of Concern may be issued when substantial questions arise regarding a published article but the available evidence is insufficient to justify an immediate correction or retraction. This measure may be appropriate while an investigation is underway or while the journal awaits further information from authors, institutions, or other relevant parties.
Once the matter has been sufficiently examined, the Expression of Concern may be followed by an appropriate editorial action, including a correction, retraction, further clarification, or a notice indicating that no additional action is necessary.
5. Retractions
JIEF may retract a published article when the available evidence establishes that the article is substantially unreliable, invalid, or associated with serious violations of research or publication ethics.
Grounds for retraction may include, but are not limited to:
- Plagiarism or the unauthorized appropriation of another person's work.
- Fabrication or falsification of research data or results.
- Manipulation of evidence or research findings.
- Serious citation manipulation that compromises the integrity of the publication.
- Duplicate or redundant publication, including undisclosed prior publication that violates publication policies.
- Research conducted in violation of applicable ethical requirements.
- Unauthorized use of copyrighted, confidential, or restricted material.
- Serious authorship irregularities or deliberate manipulation of authorship.
- Major errors that undermine the validity of the article's findings or conclusions.
A formal retraction notice will identify the affected article and explain the reasons for the retraction. The notice will remain linked to the original publication wherever technically possible. Retracted articles will be clearly labelled as “Retracted” so that readers can readily identify their publication status.
JIEF will not routinely remove retracted articles from the published record, as retaining access to the original publication, together with a clear retraction notice, supports transparency and preserves the traceability of the scholarly record.
6. Article Removal
The removal of a published article will be considered only under exceptional circumstances where continued public access may create serious legal, ethical, privacy, or safety concerns. Such circumstances may include binding legal requirements, severe violations of personal privacy, defamatory material, court orders, unresolved copyright infringements that cannot be adequately addressed through correction, or content that poses a substantial risk of harm.
When removal is necessary, JIEF will, wherever legally permissible, retain a public notice explaining that the article has been removed and providing the reason for the action. Any restrictions on the content or wording of the notice will be observed where required by law or a competent legal authority.
7. Author Responsibilities
Authors are expected to inform the editorial office promptly upon discovering any substantial error, omission, inaccurate citation, translation or transliteration problem, data irregularity, or ethical concern affecting their published work.
Authors must cooperate with the editorial team in investigating reported concerns and, where appropriate, preparing corrections, addenda, clarifications, retraction statements, or other relevant post-publication notices. Their cooperation is essential to ensuring that the scholarly record remains accurate, transparent, and reliable.
JIEF will assess proposed amendments and corrective actions independently, taking into account the available evidence, the significance of the issue, and applicable publication ethics standards.
8. Editorial Decision-Making and Publication Ethics
Decisions concerning corrections, addenda, expressions of concern, retractions, and article removal will be made by the Editor-in-Chief or an appropriately authorized editorial representative following a fair and evidence-based assessment.
In handling such matters, JIEF will refer to relevant guidance from the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and other applicable standards of scholarly publishing ethics. The journal is committed to handling post-publication conc
