Abstract

This study investigates the underlying causes of fan disagreement within the “Kelelawar” community toward the rebranding of the Indonesian band .Feast. Using a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews, the research analyzes how fans decode the band’s identity transformation and how their social backgrounds, activist experiences, and knowledge frameworks shape oppositional readings. The findings reveal that rejection is primarily expressed by fans with strong ideological attachments to .Feast’s earlier phase, particularly former student activists who viewed the band’s previous works as a platform for political expression that is now perceived as diminished. The rebranding is understood as a departure from the values and cultural practices that defined their engagement, including the disappearance of moshing culture and the thematic shift from political commentary to more personal and aesthetic narratives. This study contributes to fan culture scholarship by highlighting how a musician’s identity transformation can generate ideologically driven resistance within a dedicated fan community.
