Background and Objectives: This study discusses the meaning of al-mīzān (scales) in QS. Ar-Raḥmān [55]: 7-9. Etymologically, al-mīzān means a weighing tool or balance, which is also often interpreted as Allah's scale to judge the righteous deeds of man on the Day of Judgment. The author assumes that the scale is not only limited to God's scales but can also be interpreted as a balance, whether it is the balance of Nature, society, or religion to be maintained. Methodology: The research method uses qualitative studies with literature. In order to explore these various meanings by applying Charles Sanders Peirce's triadic semiotic approach. An approach that can explore dynamically generated new meanings.
Main Results: By applying Peirce, we see al-mīzān not only as a word that is repeated but as a sign that is constantly producing and enriching meaning, guiding our understanding of divine justice, the balance of nature, and the ethical responsibility of man within the framework of the teachings of the Qur'an. Contributions: This study expands the understanding of the textual meaning in the Qur'an by using Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic approach, which is rarely explicitly applied in interpretive studies. This study opens up space for an interdisciplinary approach between the science of interpretation and semiotic theory in revealing the symbolic meaning of the Qur'an. Conclusions: The semiotic approach emphasizes the importance of reading the Qur'an by paying attention to the symbolic context and dynamic structure of meaning stored behind the sign in the form of text.
