From Epistemology to Methodology: Berger–Luckmann’s Social Construction as a Basis for the Study of the Living Qur’an

This paper aims to formulate the epistemology of social construction by Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann as a methodological basis for the study of the Living Qur’an. The study of the Living Qur’an having developed in the form of empirical-descriptive studies of community religious practices still faces limitations in its epistemological foundation and systematic methodological framework. On the other hand, Berger–Luckmann’s social construction theory offers a conceptual tool explaining that social reality, including religious reality, is formed through a dialectical process of externalization, objectivation, and internalization. Using a philosophical-sociological approach and conceptual analysis, this paper examines the structure of the epistemology of social construction and its relevance to the study of the Living Qur’an. The study’s findings indicate that the practice of the Living Qur’an can be understood as a form of social construction of the sacred text of the Qur’an not only interpreted textually, but also presented in social reality through a process of religious cosmization that provides sacred legitimacy to these practices. These findings confirm that the epistemology of social construction is not only theoretically relevant but can also serve as a methodological basis for explaining the relationship between text, meaning, and practice in the study of the Living Qur’an. This paper contributes to strengthening the epistemological foundation of the study of the Living Qur’an by offering an integrative methodological framework between the sociology of knowledge and Qur’anic studies, thus opening up opportunities for the development of more analytical and reflective studies of the reality of Muslim religiosity.
